The past week on Waiheke has been pleasant, full of hiking and biking around the island’s endless beaches and bays in our free afternoons. A guided medicinal herb walk was today’s installation, thanks to the Waiheke Walking Festival. We even gave sea kayaking a go, though this first attempt was hampered by a bent rudder and stiff winds. Strangely, the morning on the island are almost always sunny and mild–it’s the afternoons that are variable, frequently producing wind and rain. A few afternoons have features aborted hikes or cozy nap times as we wait out the nasty weather.
We’re prepped and planted all the beds in the upper garden to feed farm folks this summer. Unfortunately, not too much is producing here now, and it has become slightly challenging to feed ourselves well with the allotted weekly food budget. So while we’ve enjoyed our two weeks in this little slice of paradise, we’re eager to see richer soils and a thriving garden. We set out tomorrow morning.
