Woke up on St George, packed all our stuff into airplane-appropriate configurations, drove to Las Vegas, and got on a plane.
Scout picked us and three other hikers up at the San Diego airport. Scout and Frodo, 2007 thru-hikers, have morphed their home into a base camp of sorts. Everything you might need to start a 2,600 mile walk is here: place to sleep, shuttle to the trail, group meals, and small things like spare plastic bags and whatever treasures are in the hiker box. There were at least a dozen other hikers there. I don’t know how they do it, but I couldn’t imagine a better way to start the trail.
Spider and I resupplied, ate a roast chicken, and replaced our grungy old water bottles. Then we came back to Scout and Frodo’s house for dinner with hikers and some folks from the PCTA. There was even dessert. I don’t know when I’ve ever felt so spoiled.
We hung out with the other hikers there, many of whom are starting tomorrow. Our friend OB, who we hiked with on the AT and summitted Katahdin with, is here, also starting the PCT tomorrow, so we got to catch up. It was great to see him.
Now, our bags are packed, our water bottles are full, our electronics are charged, and we are ready to start our hike.
